Disrupted Pubic Symphysis
This condition affects the pubic symphysis joint at the lowest, central point of the abdominal wall. It is where the two halves of the pelvis come together. Here they are separated by a pad of cartilage. The joint is largely immobile. Under certain conditions this can change and the joint can become hypermobile.
Frequent causative factors can be pregnancy, when hormone changes result in increased laxity of connective tissues and repetitive stresses or overuse seen in certain sporting scenarios.
Essentially the two parts of the pelvis can become separated resulting in a painful and unstable situation. Rest and protection with the use of crutches to aid walking are the recommended treatment. Generally once the pregnancy is over or the stresses are removed then the condition will begin to resolve. Again however the road to full recovery can be a prolonged one, possibly needing many months.
