Hip Injury: Fractured Neck of Femur

This hip injury, unless the result of major trauma of some kind, commonly affects the older generation amongst us. Fractures of the neck of the femur are a frequent consequence of falls in the elderly. The existence of osteoporosis is often a predisposing factor. In some cases the bone structure can be so frail as to be described as being like egg shells.

In such cases rapid surgical intervention to fix the break with screws, a pin or a half or full hip joint replacement is paramount as long periods of imobility or bed rest for the elderly can have extremely negative effects on their health.

Surprising, as it may be, early walking and mobilisation is the best policy after such an injury. It can take many weeks though for an elderly or infirm person to recover from such a trauma.

However recover they can given the sufficient time, the right environment and regular rehabilitation and stimulation. My own grandmother is testament to such things. Despite heart conditions and suffering numerous falls and having to undergo hip surgery as a result she seemed to find the strength and will to fight back and lived for many years to be a delight to us all.
