Osteitis Pubis

Osteitis pubis is the condition of inflammation of the PUBIC SYMPHYSIS. This is the joint at the front of the pelvis that joins the right and left halves of the pelvi, each known as a hemi pelvis, together.

It is thought to be brought on by repetitive stresses from certain sports, soccer being a particular favourite. In addition to the inflammation the joint can become excessively mobile and lax, allowing too much movement, thus rendering the pelvis unstable in certain situations.

Pain can be of a gradual onset with a widespread area of distribution into the groins and lower abdomen. Hip rotation is often painful and limited in the condition. Stiffness of the hips has been cited as a causative factor in that this puts extra stress on the symphysis pubis joint to move more than it should have to.

Treatment

Rest relieves the pain and allows the inflammation to settle. Such rest, however, may need to be prolonged (anything from three to eighteen months)to achieve complete resolution. X rays may reveal widening of the joint and/or sclerosis (extra dense bone appearing whiter than normal).

Graduated rehabilitation to include swimming and cycling is absolutely vital. This cannot be started until the symptoms have settled.
