Sartorius. 'The Tailors' Muscle'

If you did not know there is a muscle in the thigh known as sartorius or 'the tailors' muscle'. It is a thin strap like muscle that runs that whole length of the thigh. It is not that commonly injured in my experience. Especially if you compare it to rectus femoris, the most commonly injured part of the quadriceps.

The Story

The reason I mention this is because this past week I have been treating a young soccer player for what seemed initally like a common or garden thigh strain. It seemed to be specifically affecting the rectus femoris on the anterior or front aspect of the thigh.

After a week there had been only a marginal improvement and I was concerned that I was incorrect in my diagnosis. On closer re-assessment this turned out to be the case. The muscle that was injured was our particular friend we are discussing here, so called because it puts the leg into a cross legged position as a tailor would sit in days gone by.

It is an easy mistake to make and because of the frequency of rectus femoris injuries here I failed to rule out the possibiity of it being anything else. I am allowing him to play this week so we will see what the outcome is but it has served as a good reminder.

The Lesson

The lessons are simple. Never assume. Always be aware that anything is possible and remember that things are not always as they initially seem.
