Sever's Disease

Sever's Disease is another of the conditions that comes under the group of conditions known as a TRACTION APOPHYSITIS. The pathology is exactly the same as with all the other traction apophysitis conditions. In this particular case the bone affected is the heel bone or CALCANEUM. At the back of the calcaneum THE ACHILLES TENDON inserts and it is here that the inflammatory condition presents.

It is not as common as it partner Osgood Schlatter's Disease. It affects more males than females and is common in the nine to sixteen age range.

It is due to excessive pulling on the calcaneum by The Achilles Tendon resulting in swelling and pain at the site where the immmature bone is stressed.

Pain is very often felt after rest, there may be a marked limp and there is usually tenderness over thea area.

Treatment

Rest for around six to eight weeks seems sufficient to allow the condition to settle. A heel raise may help to reduce the stress on the bone and make walking more comfortable. There may be a re-occurrence of the symptoms if resumed activity becomes excessive. A graded return to normal function and sport is strongly advised following diagnosis and advice re returning to activity.
