TENOSYNOVITIS

Tenosynovitis is an irritating and often slow to resolve condition. It is an inflammation of the covering or sheath of the tendon, whereas tendonitis is inflammation of the actual tendon itself. Symptomatically they can be very similar.

There may be swelling of the tendons, they can be sore to touch and give pain on movement. Very often the synovial fluid that is in between the sheath or covering of the tendon and the tendon itself dries up leaving the tendon without the normal lubrication.

It is commonly brought on by repetitive movements. Treatment involves avoidance of or at the very least marked reduction in the causative activity. Splinting can help to alleviate the stress on the tendons and physiotherapeutic modalities can help stimulate resolution of the inflammation.

The condition is also commonly known as de Quervains syndrome.
